Using Power BI for Monitoring Multi-cloud Cost Metrics

Why Collecting Cost Metrics Data and Using Power BI

All Cloud and SaaS providers provide tools to monitor usage of their services and cost.

However, it metrics reports are so comprehensive that it becomes difficult to

  • Pinpoint the most most and least expensive service.

  • Identifying unused or idle resources.

  • Determining peak and non-peak hours.

  • Identifying rouge users from cost perspective.

  • Identifying opportunities for cost optimization.

  • Determining contribution of cost due to new services or project.

  • Integrating overlapping costs between providers in a multi-cloud or hybrid environment.

  • Doing trend analysis based on historical usage.

  • Sharing the metrics with wider audience.

  • Difficult to drill down to find the root cause.

To address the above challenges, we developed an automated process to capture, store the metrics data at one central location and then, doing difference slice and dice and drilldown the data using Power BI.
